INTRO: The number of young people in the U.S. with type 2 diabetes could surge by about 700% over the next four decades, with a greater burden falling on minority groups, a new model predicts.

If the recent acceleration of new diagnoses persists, then 220,000 people younger than 20 would have type 2 diabetes in 2060, compared with 28,000 in 2017, the latest year for which data is available, according to projections published this month in Diabetes Care. Even if the rate of new diagnoses stays constant, there would still be a 70% increase in type 2 cases by 2060... (MORE - details)
This surely is correlated to the epidemic of obesity among adolescents and childen, one in five of which are obese. One of the surest ways of overcoming Type 2 diabetes is by simply losing weight. I'm trying to do that myself, hoping to go from 220 to 200. Going off a medication (olanzipine) that slows my metabolism will be one means of accomplishing this goal. Giving up sugar and getting more exercise is another one.
Good for you, MR. Exercise is also a natural remedy to depression, which research has shown works as well as anti-depressants.

On a more philosophical note, there is no stable status quo. This means that we are all only ever getting better or getting worse. If you're not working to be/do better, over any significant time, you are doing worse. There is no truly stable equilibrium when outside factors are constantly changing.
Thanks. I'm going off Olanzipine for the weight gain and its side effect of making me sluggish. I will still be taking my antidepressants which give me the energy to start doing things for myself. If I can get down to 200 lbs then my A1C, currently at 6.1, will likely decrease as well. Being diabetic was my wake up call to start doing something about my lifestyle and diet.
Hopefully the habit of exercise becomes ingrained and self-sustaining. Then you could start to see a possibility of going off the antidepressants.
I think you’ll grow to enjoy the positive feelings that come from exercise, MR. Once you find a workout plan you like, it will become something you look forward to. Nice to see your outlook about it. : )
