INTRO: Several U.S. government agencies announced a plan to fix Puerto Rico’s ailing electrical grid and move it toward renewable energy. The initiative will combine efforts from the U.S. Department of Energy, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department Housing and Urban Development along with local policies to start a clean energy transition by 2025, with the goal of reaching 100% renewable energy on the island by 2050. For years, Puerto Ricans have suffered from frequent blackouts due to an old grid that has not had proper management or maintenance.

According to a statement from the DOE, this push to modernize Puerto Rico’s grid is part of the Biden administration’s commitment to ensure that $12 billion in federal aid for the island’s energy sector leads to a more resilient and sustainable grid.
